Come to the Street Museum - Create Your Own Museum with Yona Friedman!
The Street Museum is an important part of the upcoming exhibition, Yona Friedman: Mobile Architecture. Throughout the duration of the exhibition (May 15th-August 16th), the Power Station of Art will invite 20 participantsper week to exhibit their own collections or works and tell their own stories.
Don’t hesitate to bring your collections and works. The Street Museum is nothing like the traditional museum, but to break its order, challenge its authority, call for emotions and anarchy, welcome daily alive spirit.

Who is Yona Friedman?
At the end of the 1950s, Yona Friedman was in his thirties. The Hungarian proposed his “Mobile Architecture” theory at CIAM then. He believed that residences and urban planning should be decided by residents, and publicly questioned both Le Corbusier’s assertion that residents should adapt to the buildingand the individualism of the Team 10, which evoked much controversy within the architectural circle. For more than half a century, Friedman has retained a distance from mainstream architecture. His theory doesn’t just go beyond architecture, but examines the nature of architecture, the identity of residents, and the mechanism of civil society in terms of philosophy, sociology and psychology.His concepts not only represented a challenge to the urban planning of the time, but also inspired a new way of thinking forlater architectural design, and have had far-reaching practical influence on urban planning in developing countries.
Being in his nineties, Friedman has few realized works. He has however created a unique hand-drawn visual language, and is known as a utopian architect. His architectural concepts and visual expression have had important impact on UK’s Archigram and Metabolism movement in Japan.
What is the Street Museum?
The mention of the word ‘museum’ creates automatic associations with those institutions composed of different rooms, small or large, filled with exhibits. The latter are always displayed in protective, transparent showcases. However, is it absolutely necessary for those display cases to be located in a closed-off indoor space in museum? They should be everywhere, like on the streets or in gardens. They require no special protection. The “Street Museum” is a series of display cases set out in the street.
In 2004, Friedman launched his Street Museum project. He has already created two such museums in Como, Italy. The Street Museum invites every resident in the city to display objects of particular significance to them. The museum is sentimental, and represents personal experience – so it has nothing to do with academy or the elite. The form of street museum differsas the environments and restrictions change.
The Street Museum in PSA may not takes place in an atmosphere of ‘chaos’, but we hope nonetheless to open a door for individual expression within the institution of the museum. The exhibition will feature organic glass ‘display cases’ in the structure of protein chain and in the form of drawer.
As time goes by, the Street Museum’s display of individual favors will become an actual“Museum of Civilization”! If this stream of innovation could last infinitely, say for a century, these exhibited pieces will become “mirrors of the century”!
How to become an exhibiting artist at the Street Museum?
1. The piece must be cheap and unplugged asthere is no security at the street museum.
2. Any media, either original or readymade is accepted.
3. The piece must be no larger than 80x80cm and weigh no more than 1kg.
4. Artists should display their own collections and express their own favors.
5. Due to the limited number of display cases, please send pictures of your potential exhibits to firstname.lastname@example.org. The PSA will review the pictures and make an initial selection. You will then be informed of the next step of submitting your exhibits.
6. All the participants resident in Shanghai could come to the site and take part in the installation, as well as the compilation and production of the catalogue.
